One thought has been occupying my mind lately:
What if intelligence didn't evolve because nature wanted us to understand the universe? What if it evolved simply because better prediction meant better survival?
At first glance, that doesn't sound particularly revolutionary. Animals constantly predict their environment. A gazelle predicts where a lion will attack. A bird predicts the movement of the wind. A wolf predicts the behavior of its pack.
Prediction keeps organisms alive.
Modern neuroscience may support this broader picture. Karl Friston's Free Energy Principle proposes that the brain is fundamentally a prediction machine, continuously updating its internal model of the world to minimize surprise. Surprise, in this context, isn't merely emotional—it's a sign that reality differs from expectation, increasing uncertainty about what to do next.
Perhaps the brain's primary objective is not to "think," but to reduce uncertainty.
When Prediction Became General Intelligence
Early prediction was probably concrete.
Is there a predator in the bushes?
Will that branch support my weight?
Is this berry poisonous?
Over millions of years, however, evolution didn't simply improve threat detection. It improved the ability to build increasingly sophisticated models of reality.
Eventually those models became abstract.
Humans no longer predict only immediate dangers. We predict economies, weather, politics, engineering failures, diseases, social interactions, and even hypothetical futures that may never occur.
The same machinery that once detected a leopard in the grass can now imagine the collapse of civilization centuries from now.
That is an astonishing capability.
It may also be the beginning of a problem.
The Runaway Feedback Loop
As prediction improves, imagination improves.
As imagination improves, the number of possible futures explodes.
More possible futures create more uncertainty.
More uncertainty demands better prediction.
Prediction improves again.
The cycle repeats.
Eventually the search space becomes effectively infinite.
No matter how intelligent we become, there will always be another unknown, another possibility, another unanswered question.
Perhaps human anxiety isn't a design flaw.
Perhaps it is an inevitable consequence of a prediction system that outgrew the environment it evolved for.
A gazelle escapes a lion and calms down.
Humans lie awake at 3 a.m. worrying about conversations that never happened, disasters that never occurred, and futures that may never exist.
The prediction engine no longer has an "off" switch because the space of possible threats has become limitless.
The Social Explosion
The environment didn't only contain predators.
It eventually contained other humans.
Unlike storms or lions, people possess intentions.
They deceive.
They cooperate.
They compete.
They plan.
They remember.
Now the brain must model not only reality but the minds of other individuals.
What does that person know?
What are they planning?
What do they think I believe?
This recursive modelling becomes extraordinarily expensive.
It is possible that social complexity, more than physical danger alone, accelerated the growth of human intelligence.
Civilization as a Prediction Machine
This raises another interesting possibility.
Perhaps many of humanity's greatest achievements are different expressions of the same underlying drive: reducing uncertainty.
Science improves our predictive model of the physical world.
Engineering allows us to manipulate that world reliably.
Mathematics gives us precise tools for prediction.
Philosophy attempts to resolve uncertainty in reasoning, knowledge, and ethics.
Law creates predictable expectations for behaviour.
Education transfers predictive models between generations.
Even art may play a role by simulating emotional experiences, preserving stories, strengthening social bonds, and communicating information across generations.
Religion may also fit into this picture.
Long before modern science could explain lightning, disease, drought, or death, belief systems provided explanations that reduced uncertainty and encouraged cooperation.
Whether those explanations were scientifically correct is a separate question.
From an evolutionary perspective, a shared explanation may have been more valuable than no explanation at all.
Likewise, morality itself may predate religion.
Many social animals already demonstrate cooperation, reciprocity, fairness, and punishment of defectors. Humans likely inherited these tendencies long before organized religions emerged.
Rather than creating morality, religion may have expanded and reinforced it, allowing much larger groups of unrelated individuals to cooperate under shared rules and shared narratives.
The Cost of Intelligence
Natural selection does not optimize for happiness.
It optimizes for survival and reproduction.
If constant prediction improved survival, then evolution had little reason to produce minds that felt completely at peace.
Perhaps our desire to understand everything is not merely curiosity.
Perhaps it is a survival mechanism that eventually became self-reinforcing.
The more we understand, the more we realize remains unknown.
And then comes the greatest uncertainty of all.
A sufficiently intelligent mind eventually discovers that it will die.
It realizes that the universe is vastly larger than it can ever fully comprehend.
Some questions may never have complete answers.
The prediction engine encounters problems it cannot solve.
A Thought, Not a Conclusion
This is not a claim that science has proven.
It is simply a hypothesis that I find fascinating.
What if intelligence is the result of an ancient survival mechanism that became increasingly general, increasingly abstract, and eventually capable of modelling itself?
If so, then our greatest strengths and our greatest struggles may share the same origin.
The drive to explore.
The desire to create.
The need to understand.
The discomfort of uncertainty.
The search for meaning.
They may all be different expressions of a single evolutionary engine that has been refining its model of reality for hundreds of millions of years.
Perhaps civilization itself is what happens when a prediction machine becomes intelligent enough to ask why it exists.
